About the Raleigh, North Carolina Area 

Raleigh is the capital of the state of North Carolina and the seat of Wake County. Raleigh is known as the "City of Oaks" for its many oak trees. It is the second most populous city in North Carolina after Charlotte. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city's estimated population on July 1, 2008 was 392,552, making Raleigh the 8th fastest growing city in the United States.

The city is 145 miles south of Richmond, Virginia; 232 miles south of Washington, D.C.; and 143 miles northeast of Charlotte, North Carolina. 

In 2008, Raleigh featured prominently in a number of "Top 10 Lists," including those by Forbes, MSNBC and Money Magazine, due to its quality of life and business climate. Commercial and residential real estate are both very prominent in this area.
